It was 11:30 am when I looked at my watch and realized I hadn’t gotten all the school supplies on the “Back to School Supply List” given to me by the kids’ school. I was really excited (and am really excited) for my kids to attend this top charter school in my district. The school is a brand new school being built near my home and boasts a strong leadership curriculum! I home schooled my children up until this very point in our lives and now everything is going to change. But it’ll be a good change. I will be allowed the chance to focus solely on some projects I feel strongly about and really get my health coach business up and running. As a side note, for the past year and a half I have been a consultant for a direct sales company that I really really love and am passionate about. Our mission is to rid homes of harmful toxic cleaners and chemicals. We are a microfiber company come all the way over from Norway. Our microfiber cloths kill 99% bacteria with just water…SO…for the past almost two years now, my children have been doing a big chunk of the cleaning for me since there are no chemicals involved. My children have no idea what a disinfectant wipe is or window cleaner or even hand sanitizers. All these things have been banned from my home since educating myself on the dangers of household cleaners. My heart literally sunk low today as I looked at that school supply list and right at the bottom it said “Clorox Wipes”…right next to “Hand Sanitizer”. When I first joined up with Norwex (my direct sales company) I dug deep into the disinfectant wipe world to really find out the harm they can do….a wealth of scary information was brought to my attention…
As consumers, we get a little lazy when it comes to label reading (or maybe we’re just too busy or don’t care), but I really wanted to know. When I pulled up the Material Data Safety Sheet on a certain wipe brand I was SHOCKED! The first sentence said “KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND PETS”. Next “THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS: TARGETS THE LIVER. BlOOD. EYES. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM. SKIN”…okay okay, that right there would be plenty of information for me NOT to use a disinfectant wipe. But the label went on to warn me of irritations the product can cause if inhaled or ingested..although I don’t plan on doing either of those, my kids might! just saying.
But then I read on “Wash exposed area thoroughly with soap and water” “Keep out of reach of children”…again! “Do Not Allow Product To Enter Sewer or Waterways” (I sure hope no one is flushing these). “Wash hands after handling and before eating” “Food contact surfaces must be rinsed with potable water” “Should wear full eye and face protection” “Should wear impermeable gloves” And of course the last line..”Although certain hazards are described herein, we cannot guarantee that these are the only hazards that exist. The supplier nor any of its subsidiaries assumes any liability whatsoever.”
So there you have it folks!!! That is why my little heart sunk so low today. I reached out to my fellow Norwex consultants to ask them what they would do. Many have tried to explain to the teacher and even the district about this product, only to have the door slammed in their face. They’ve even given free microfiber cloths to replace the wipes only to have the teacher return the cloths and demand the wipes. I don’t blame teachers. They are amazing and just doing their job. I love teachers and everything they do and don’t wish to make their lives hard with this wipes attitude of mine. This is sad my friends. I first cringed when I saw what the school was serving up for hot lunch…but at least I have control over this by packing a home lunch for my kiddos. That is another topic I am very passionate about…TRUST ME, you don’t want to get me started on what school systems deem as “healthy lunch options”. But again, big government gets involved in this one and there’s not much a school can do anymore. This time however, I’m not sure I can do anything about this.
While at the store buying school supplies, I made my way down the cleaning isle. An isle I have not been down in a very very very long time. I felt lost and alone in that isle. Probably because I was all alone in that isle😉. I see there is a more abundant supply of natural cleaners on the market…which are still a waste of money in my opinion since you have to keep buying the stuff… but to each their own and I am happy people have options at least. I picked up the wipes, held them for a second and put them right back on the shelf. I JUST COULDN’T DO IT! I couldn’t get myself to buy those wipes. I would be a hypocrite. My job is to literally go into people’s homes and teach them the dangers of this exact product. After putting rubber gloves on, I use this product on a plate, then get a black light out to show people the chemical residue left behind! EVERYONE GASPS…EVERYTIME! You may have disinfected the surface with that wipe, but what’s left behind is a layer of chemical coating your surfaces. Let’s hope you don’t plan on putting food on that surface. Once in contact with skin, your endocrine system is disrupted. Do you know anyone with a thyroid problem? How about obesity? An autoimmune disorder? These people have an even smaller tolerance to chemicals thus effecting their system in a greater way.
So many people come to me and say “Heather, I have the diet and sleep thing down. Everything seems perfect in those areas, why am I not able to lose weight”? This is usually when I ask them to consider all the chemicals they are exposed to including any perfumes or lotions they put on their skin. Basic household things used on a daily basis that contain toxic ingredients. You wouldn’t believe the difference their health takes when they take all that out!! Weight loss starts to happen, the body starts to heal. All those chemicals are a stressor on our systems. So it’s time we start reading labels.
THE SOLUTION: Well here it is in a nutshell!
And really my dream is that one day every classroom will look like this:
A Norwex cloth or even any microfiber cloth for that matter at every single desk in the world! No more exposing our kids to these toxic chemicals. Just good old water and a cloth!
If you’d like more information about proper classroom cleaning, there is a great article put out by the state of Washington found HERE: http://www.doh.wa.gov/CommunityandEnvironment/Schools/EnvironmentalHealth/ClassroomCleaning
If you’re curious at all about Norwex products, you can always check it out HERE
I am happy to report that California has banned the use of wipes due to the landfill buildup. They don’t break down my friends.
So NO…I don’t think I’m better than anyone else out there and hope I don’t come across that way. I feel it an obligation almost to educate others once you learn something valuable. Especially when it involves your health. Thanks to all my readers who truly understand that!
So for your health and the health of our planet, PLEASE consider using something other than wipes and toxic cleaners.
Here’s to your Health
